What We Do

What a Smart Panel Actually Does

Strip away the marketing and a smart panel does two things a normal panel doesn't: it measures every circuit, and it can switch them. Here's what that gets you in a real house.

What You Actually Get

  • Circuit-level monitoring. See what the dryer, the heat pump and the EV charger are pulling, one breaker at a time, in the app.
  • Remote switching. Turn a circuit off from your phone, and back on when you're ready for it.
  • Load management built in. Big loads slow down or pause as the house gets near its limit, instead of tripping the main.
  • Works with solar, batteries and backup. Most energy systems talk to the panels built for them, one more reason the spec sheet beats the sales page.

Underneath all of it, it's still a panel. When a circuit draws too much, the breaker still trips, that's the job it never stops doing. The smart part rides on top of that and belongs to the manufacturer: their app, their updates. Before you buy, ask what happens if the company behind the app goes away.

Installed LED lights in my garage. Also added some exterior plugs to the house. The lights were time-intensive and they finished it quickly and did the install PERFECTLY. These guys are the real deal, they are as good as it gets, and Justin treated me fairly even tho it was more work than he anticipated! I would recommend them any day

We had a great experience working with taurus electric. They were professional, reliable, and did excellent quality work in our home. They were considerate of our budget without compromising on the outcome, which we really appreciated. We have also worked with them on a professional contracting level, and because we trust them personally, we are confident they bring that same level of care, integrity, and value to our clients. I would absolutely trust their judgment for any future electrical work or jobs. :)

Justin and his team provided an outstanding experience from start to finish. They were punctual, professional, and extremely knowledgeable. The crew maintained a very clean work environment and treated the space with respect. What impressed me most was the level of service, they went above and beyond, completing many little extras without hesitation. Justin always answered my calls, followed through on commitments, and showed up exactly when he said he would. He even made time for a smaller job, which has not been my experience with others in the past. I am beyond pleased with the results and the entire process. I highly recommend Justin and his team to anyone seeking quality workmanship and reliable service.

Plan Your Project

Do You Need One?

Three honest questions before anyone quotes you. One of them might save you several thousand dollars.

01Adding two or more big loads (EV charger, heat pump, hot tub, suite) in the next few years?
02Solar or battery storage on the plan?
03Want to see and control usage circuit by circuit?

Answer all three to see where you land

A load calculation settles it.

How It Works

Smart Panel, Load Manager or Panel Upgrade

Three ways to make room for the loads you're planning. They solve the same problem at very different prices, so start with the cheapest one and work down.

Three Ways to Make Room

Load Management Device

Usually the least work of the three. A small device watches your main and turns the charger down when the house is already pulling hard, so the charger often goes in without touching the service at all.

BC Hydro currently pays $200 toward an eligible EV power management device for single-family homes (checked October 2026).

Smart Panel

Monitoring and control across the whole panel, not just one circuit. It makes the most sense when several big loads are on the plan, or solar and a battery, and you actually want to see and steer what the house is doing.

“If you're only adding one EV charger, I'd usually start with load management.”

Plan Your Project

What It Costs

The electrical work has published ranges on our estimator. The smart hardware doesn't, and we're not going to guess at a number for it on a website.

$1,200 – $2,500 Sub-panel addition
$2,500 – $4,500 100A → 200A upgrade
$4,500 – $7,500 Full service + mast/meter
Quoted on assessment Smart Panel Hardware

Three things move the total: whether you replace the panel outright or add smart breakers to your existing one, where the maker offers them; whether your service size stays the same or changes, which pulls BC Hydro into the job; and how much of a solar or battery system the panel has to carry. That's why the hardware is priced after we've seen your house.

Permits and Safety

Code, Permits and Certification

Every panel change in this province is permitted work, and a smart panel is no exception. Here's how the job runs, from first look to app on your phone.

Red circular seal with the words Interprovincial Standard Canada Norme Interprovinciale.

Assessment and Load Calculation

We look at the existing panel, the service size and the loads you're planning, then run the calculation that settles everything else. If a smart panel isn't the right answer for your house, this is where we tell you.

Technical Safety BC Permit and Install

We pull the electrical permit from Technical Safety BC and install to the BC Electrical Code, the 2024 Canadian Electrical Code as adopted here on March 4, 2025. If the service size changes, the BC Hydro disconnect and reconnect gets coordinated before the day, not on it.

Inspection and App Setup

The inspection gets booked and passed, then the smart side: the app on your phone, what each circuit shows, how the load limits behave. We walk you through it, not a manual.

One warning before you order anything online: equipment installed in BC needs a recognised Canadian certification mark, and not every smart panel sold online in the United States carries one for Canada. A US-only mark is not accepted here, so check the mark before you buy. If you do bring your own hardware, we verify it before it goes on the wall. Technical Safety BC's approved certification marks.

Smart Panel Questions

Usually not. A lot of EV chargers go in on the existing service with a dedicated circuit, and when the amps are tight a load management device is usually the cheaper first answer. If you're only adding one charger, I'd usually start with load management and leave the smart panel for later.
