What We Do

What Your Hot Tub Actually Needs

Some small plug-and-play tubs run on 120 volts from a dedicated outlet. Most full-size tubs run on 240 volts and get hardwired. Either way, the spec sheet tells us what it needs, not the sales sheet.

What Goes Into a Hot Tub Hookup

  • Read the spec sheet. The manufacturer's install sheet sets the breaker size and the wire size. That's what we wire to.
  • A dedicated circuit. The tub gets its own circuit from the panel. Nothing else shares it.
  • GFCI protection. It cuts the power fast if current goes where it shouldn't, which matters most around water.
  • Bonding. The metal parts of the tub and its equipment get tied together so there's no difference in voltage between them.
  • A disconnect in the right spot. Close enough to reach, far enough from the water. The distances are below.
  • A permit and inspection. Technical Safety BC needs a permit for this work, even when a licensed electrician does it.

The spa dealer's "50 amp" might be right. But the spec sheet is what we wire to, and it's what the inspector checks.

Installed LED lights in my garage. Also added some exterior plugs to the house. The lights were time-intensive and they finished it quickly and did the install PERFECTLY. These guys are the real deal, they are as good as it gets, and Justin treated me fairly even tho it was more work than he anticipated! I would recommend them any day

We had a great experience working with taurus electric. They were professional, reliable, and did excellent quality work in our home. They were considerate of our budget without compromising on the outcome, which we really appreciated. We have also worked with them on a professional contracting level, and because we trust them personally, we are confident they bring that same level of care, integrity, and value to our clients. I would absolutely trust their judgment for any future electrical work or jobs. :)

Justin and his team provided an outstanding experience from start to finish. They were punctual, professional, and extremely knowledgeable. The crew maintained a very clean work environment and treated the space with respect. What impressed me most was the level of service, they went above and beyond, completing many little extras without hesitation. Justin always answered my calls, followed through on commitments, and showed up exactly when he said he would. He even made time for a smaller job, which has not been my experience with others in the past. I am beyond pleased with the results and the entire process. I highly recommend Justin and his team to anyone seeking quality workmanship and reliable service.

Where the Disconnect Can Go

The disconnect is the switch that kills power to the tub. It's got to be outside the house. It's got to be at least 1.5 metres from the water. And closer than 3 metres, it needs GFCI protection or a barrier.

  1. Under 1.5 m Not allowed

Too close to the water. The disconnect can't go here, no matter how handy the spot looks.

  2. 1.5 to 3 m Allowed, with protection

It needs GFCI protection, or a permanent barrier between the switch and the water.

  3. Over 3 m Allowed

Still outside and easy to reach. If you can't see the tub from the switch, it has to lock off.

The ground under the tub matters now too. If the tub sits on the ground, the 2024 code calls for a copper bonding ring around it, or a non-conductive surface within 1.5 metres where you'd step in, like rubber matting, wood or composite. A concrete pad on its own no longer counts. Swapping in a similar tub on an existing pad is the exception.

Will Your Panel Handle It?

Room on the Panel, or an Upgrade?

A 240-volt hot tub is one of the bigger loads in a house. If you're on 100-amp service or the panel's already full, a load calculation tells us which way it goes: fit it as-is, rebalance a few circuits, or upgrade the panel. If the cheaper option works, we say so.

In an older home, it's worth a safety look before you add a load this size. An electrical safety inspection is a good place to start.

What Hot Tub Wiring Costs

These are the same ranges our project estimator uses, so the number here matches the number there.

$800 – $1,800 Hot tub dedicated circuit
$1,800 – $4,000 Pool equipment + bonding

What moves it: how far the tub sits from the panel and whether the run needs a trench, how much room the panel has left, where the disconnect can go, and whether the ground under the tub needs a bonding ring or a non-conductive surface.

How It Works

From Assessment to First Soak

Six steps, done by Red Seal electricians, and the water goes in last.

Red circular seal with the words "Interprovincial Standard Canada Norme Interprovinciale" in black capital letters.

  1. Step 1: Assessment

We look at the panel, where the tub's going, and the route between them. Have the spec sheet handy if you've got it.

  2. Step 2: Itemized Quote

Materials, labour, permit and inspection on their own lines, so you can see what you're paying for.

  3. Step 3: Technical Safety BC Permit

We pull the permit as the licensed contractor before any work starts.

  4. Step 4: Rough-In and Disconnect

We run the dedicated circuit and mount the disconnect outside, the right distance from the water.

  5. Step 5: Connect and Test

Once the tub's in place, we connect it, bond it and test the GFCI before anything else happens.

  6. Step 6: Inspection, Then Fill

Technical Safety BC may inspect the work. Once we've tested everything and you're clear, it's yours to fill.

Fill it after we've tested it, not before. Look up a permit on Technical Safety BC's permit search.

Hot Tub Wiring Questions

The questions we hear most from Chilliwack homeowners before the tub arrives.

Only if it's a small 120-volt plug-and-play tub built for it, and then it needs its own dedicated outlet with GFCI protection. Most full-size tubs run on 240 volts and have to be hardwired. The spec sheet says which one you've got, and that's what we wire to.
