When the grid drops, the furnace fan stops. So does the sump pump, and out on an acreage, the well pump. A standby generator is how you keep the things that matter running until the power's back.
Most outages are an inconvenience. The trouble is what quietly stops while you wait: the heat, the pump keeping the basement dry, and on an acreage with a well, the water itself. BC Hydro's outage map shows what's out right now.
What Stops First
Furnace fan or boiler. Even a gas furnace needs power for its fan and controls. No power, no heat.
Sump pump. The pump keeping groundwater out of the basement stops the moment the power does.
Well pump. On an acreage with a well, no power means no water at the tap.
Fridge and freezer. Fine for a while with the doors shut. A long outage is a different story.
Internet and phones. The modem and router go dark, and so does any phone line that runs through them.
A backup generator doesn't have to run the whole house. It has to run the things on this list that matter to you, and the rest of this page is about how to pick them.
Abbotsford isn't one kind of property, so it isn't one kind of generator job. Here's how it usually breaks down.
In-Town Homes
Clearbrook, West Abbotsford and Auguston. Most houses here need the furnace, the sump pump, the fridge and a few circuits, not the whole house. An essential-circuits setup usually covers it.
Acreages and Farms
Mt. Lehman, Bradner and Matsqui. A well pump means no power, no water. Shops, outbuildings and the run back to the house all come into the plan.
Low-Lying Ground
Sumas Prairie sits low, and the City of Abbotsford lists major floods there in 1990, 2021 and 2025. In heavy rain, the sump pump has to keep running when the power doesn't. In a real flood, follow the city's evacuation orders.
Panels That Need Work First
Older panels in established neighbourhoods sometimes need work before a transfer switch can go in. We'll tell you up front. More on panel upgrades in Abbotsford.
What moves the quote: how far the generator sits from the panel, the gas or propane run to it (a licensed gas fitter makes that connection, and we build it into the plan), how much room the panel has, and the permit and inspection.
Size it to what has to keep running, not to everything in the house. Tick what matters to you and you'll see where it usually lands.
What Each Setup Usually Covers
Interlock and Portable
The fridge and freezer, furnace fan, sump pump, a few lights and the internet. You start the generator and flip the interlock yourself.
Essential-Circuit Standby
All of that plus a well pump and a handful of circuits you choose, switched over automatically when the grid drops.
Whole-Home Standby
The whole panel, heavy loads included: a heat pump, electric range, water heater or EV charger. Or a smaller unit with load management taking turns.
How It Works
Transfer Switches and Load Management
The generator is only half of it. The other half is how it connects to your house, and that's the part that decides whether it's safe.
Interlock Kit and Inlet
For a portable generator. An inlet goes on the outside wall, and an interlock on the panel makes it impossible to have the main breaker and the generator on at the same time. You start the generator, plug it in and pick which circuits run.
Automatic Transfer Switch
For a standby unit. It senses the outage, starts the generator and switches your circuits over. When the grid comes back, it switches back and lets the generator shut down.
Load Management
Lets a smaller generator serve a 200 amp home by pausing big loads like an EV charger or air conditioner while the essentials run. It's the same idea we use for EV chargers in Abbotsford.
Running a generator into an outlet with a double-ended cord is how line crews get hurt. It's got to be permitted. It's got to be inspected. And it's got to be installed so it can never backfeed the grid. Approved transfer equipment is a code requirement, not an option.
Fuel Options
Natural Gas or Propane
In town, the gas is usually already at the street. Out on an acreage, it often isn't. That mostly decides it.
Natural Gas
Where FortisBC gas already runs to the house, the generator is piped straight in, so there's no tank to watch. That suits long outages. The gas line and meter have to be big enough for the generator as well as the furnace and water heater, so that gets checked first.
Propane
For acreages and farms without gas service. The tank size sets how long the generator can run before it needs a refill, so it gets sized with the generator, and deliveries need planning before a storm, not during one.
Gas-fuelled units also involve a licensed gas fitter for the fuel connection. We build both into the plan and the quote.
What to Expect
Installation, Permits and Upkeep
No surprises and no hidden fees. Here's what's part of every generator job we do in Abbotsford.
What's Included
Free On-Site Assessment
We look at your panel, the loads you want backed up and where the generator can sit, and run the load calculation.
Itemized Quote
Equipment, labour, permits and inspection on their own lines, so you can see what you're paying for.
Permits and Inspection
We pull the Technical Safety BC permit and coordinate the inspection, plus BC Hydro if your service needs it.
Red Seal Installation
Generator, transfer equipment and wiring installed and tested, then a walkthrough so you know how it all works.
Then there's upkeep. Most standby units run a scheduled self-test, and they still need servicing on the manufacturer's schedule. A generator nobody services is a lawn ornament, so plan for it from day one.

They were considerate of our budget without compromising on the outcome, which we really appreciated. Justin and his team provided an outstanding experience from start to finish. They were punctual, professional, and extremely knowledgeable. The crew maintained a very clean work environment and treated the space with respect. What impressed me most was the level of service, they went above and beyond, completing many little extras without hesitation. Justin always answered my calls, followed through on commitments, and showed up exactly when he said he would. He even made time for a smaller job, which has not been my experience with others in the past. I am beyond pleased with the results and the entire process. I highly recommend Justin and his team to anyone seeking quality workmanship and reliable service.

Abbotsford Backup Generator Questions
Yes. In Abbotsford, electrical permits come from Technical Safety BC, not the city. Gas-fuelled units also involve a licensed gas fitter for the fuel connection. We pull the electrical permit and build both into the plan and the quote.
Yes, if the generator and transfer equipment are sized for it. Many well pumps run on 240 volts and draw a burst of power when they start, so the pump goes into the load calculation. On an acreage, it's often the main reason for getting a generator at all.
For a lot of in-town homes, yes: the fridge, furnace fan, sump pump and a few lights. You start it and switch over yourself, and it has to run outside, away from doors and windows. If nobody's home to do that, or you need the well pump or heavy loads, standby makes more sense.
It can, with a generator sized for it or with load management taking turns. A heat pump is one of the bigger loads in a house, so it pushes you toward whole-home standby. A load calculation tells us which way it goes.
Usually propane, because many acreages don't have gas service. Where FortisBC gas already runs to the house, natural gas means no tank to refill. Either way, a licensed gas fitter makes the fuel connection.
On the manufacturer's schedule, which depends on the unit and how much it runs. Most standby units run a scheduled self-test, but that doesn't replace servicing. We'll go over the schedule for the unit you choose at the assessment.
